Car Insurers are now required to ask for the driver’s licence numbers of both policyholders and named drivers.

The change to the Road Traffic Act comes into effect on 31 March 2025.  Drivers in Ireland will soon need to provide the driving license numbers of every driver insured on a private car insurance policy.

This change will apply to both new and existing car insurance policies, and from the 31st March drivers will need to give not just their license details as the policyholder to insurers but also those of any named drivers on that policy.

Mark Hewlett, Castleacre Insurance says ‘Your broker will be asking for additional details to make sure your car insurance is valid so it is worth checking that anyone who you insure on your current car policy, or want to insure in the future, has an up to date licence in plenty of time for the end of March.’
